iPhoto quits unexpectedly when exporting slideshow

iPhoto quits unexpectedly when I export a slideshow. I'm using the following command 'File', 'Export', 'Slideshow tab', unchecking automatically send to iTunes and checking Large. With experimentation I've discovered it will export if I select Medium, and will fail if Display is checked. I've also verified that sharing to iDVD via Share works fine.

I've simplified the slideshow to two slides, and get the same crash.

I'm running this on a Mac Mini, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory, exporting to my Mac's HD, which has 95 Gb free space.

The information that is presented is pasted below -- let me know anything else that would be useful to help resolve.

Can anyone offer suggestions to help me with this? Thanks!

You're indicating that it's those two photos that are causing the crash, right? If so export the original version of them to the Desktop. Open each with Preview and save as a new jpg file with a new file name. Import the two new files into iPhoto and into the slideshow replacing the original versions of those two photos. Then see if you can export successfully.

Have a look at the crash report above:

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

Note the number of the Crashed Thread - 24

Can you paste that section of the report in.

Sure, I've pasted in the full thread section down to the binary file section.

Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If iWeb does not crash when exporting a slideshow from the new library the culprit is your current library.

If that's the case and If you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library (This fix will lose your slideshows, books, calendars, etc.)

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

If OT's suggestion doesn't work I think you need to re-install iPhoto.

    To re-install iPhoto

    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

    /var/db/receipts/

    2c: on 10.7 they're at

    /private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

    3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

OK, I've tried all recommendations and the problem still occurs. Here's what I've done to date :

    1) I followed OT's recommendation and created a new library, downloaded half dozen pictures from my camera, turned them into a slideshow, did the export (Large) and it crashed. Based on this, I assume the library is not causing the issue.

    2) I added a new user, then logged in as that user, created a new library, downloaded some pictures from my camera, built a slideshow, did the export (again Large) and it crashed. This suggests there's nothing in my environment and/or preferences that is causing the problem.

    3) I removed the iPhoto application and receipts files Per Terence's suggestion, loaded new iPhoto from my system DVD, did a software update to pull down the latest version, opened up the library and did an export on a slideshow -- it crashed.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a bug in the '09 iPhoto software -- is there any way to validate if this operation works for others running this software version or if Apple knows about this problem?

I did try the same operation on my iMac, which runs a newer version, iPhoto 11, and it works fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions ? I'm thinking maybe I should upgrade to iLife 11... or maybe Lion.

I don't think it's a bug but something do do with your setup. Try a different theme and transition. If that doesn't help then try this:

1 - run OnyX with the settings shown in this screenshot:

    User uploaded file

Note: rebooting may take longer the first time.

Also, as a wild, shot in the dark, reapply the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.8 Supplemental Update updaters followed by a repair of disk permisisons and a reboort.

Well, I certainly appreciate all the support and suggestions... downloaded OnyX and went through the recommendations... but did not get any improvement... my iPhoto still crashes anytime I export a slideshow in the Large configuration.

I decided to upgrade to iPhoto '11 and see if the newer version could handle this. Just downloaded '11 from app store... I then tried to export one of the slideshows in Large format... said a quick prayer, and pressed enter. It worked fine.

I'll never know if this was a quirk on just my machine, or if this is iPhoto '09 issue. Fortunately the newer version does what I need, and it's a good idea to bring this version up to the level of the other machines in the house.

Again, thanks for all the guidance.

I was having the same problem and found a workaroud that may help others. My crash log looked nearly identical.Same Exception Type. This was happening to me on a Mac Pro Quad Core with 9 gigs of RAM 10.7.3 with a fresh install of iPhoto and iMovie 09. I tried what others have suggested from what I found in the forums. Rebuild library, try a new library and photos etc. Now I just go to File-> Export -> Slideshow and select custom export. Works just fine. Why I have no idea but it works and I can keep making movies and slide shows. Hope this helps someone else.
