Is it possible to use iChat on an iPhone?

Is it possible to chat with a Mac with an iPhone (over iMessage for example)?

Thanks for help 🙂

Hi,

I have not tried this but...

In iChat if the computer is set so that it thinks it is in the United States AND the Buddy has a Phone in the United States that uses a carrier that allows AOL to forward SMS messages (and they have an iPhone) it should be possible to have the message appear in iMessage.

Start with System Preferences > International (OS X 10.6.x) or Language an Text in Lion.

In the Format tab chose the United States.

This will show the SMS option in iChat.

Add Buddy's Cell Phone Number preceded by a + symbol (+123456789)

This number HAS to be in the States.

It also has to be with a carrier that is getting incoming SMS from AIM/AOL (Not all of them do).

AIM/AOL have never rolled out SMS forwarding to the rest of the world.

I could not say how many US carriers actually do this.

In practical terms the percentage is so small that it is impractical to think it will work.

I see you found the beta.

I find it works OK.

Some iChat Theatre items have changed:-

Albums and Slide shows can not be chosen or dragged to the Video Chat

Can only be chosen from the + icon in the Video chat (No Menu items for it)

Events get shown as Slideshows
Faces can be used (I Presume Places as well)

Using iChat Buddy Lists for Video means 3 and 4 ways can still be done

Where as the Video icon on the Messages window launches FaceTime.
