Do not drag to the Desktop! I think where you might be running into trouble is you are trying to drag the whole MS Office folder from Applications to the Desktop. You have to open that folder first and then locate each app (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc..) that you want on the Dock to the Dock. It will look like
Misunderstanding : see above : what I want to do is to drag the W, E and PP icons to the Dock (not to the Desktop)
Each time I try, the system refuses to "stick" the icons onto the Dock.....
The only thing I can do is to drag those icons to the Desktop which creates some shortcuts that you can on the right part of my screenshot.
thanks
Sounds like you have Parental controls turned on for your daughter's account. You need to go to System Preferences > Accounts and unlock your daughter's account, then go to Parental Controls. There, under Apps you can uncheck "Allow User to Modify the Dock." You will then be able to add more app icons to the dock.
Any application installed on the computer by default is usable by all the users. If you have an app you want in each users Dock that isn't there by default here are instructions. Locate the app in the Applications folder and drag it to the Dock for each user.
As someone new to OS X, I'd recommend bookmarking and using:
To install an app in mac os x, you have to drop it into your programms folder.
If it is inside this folder, every user can access it. As long as your app is only in a user specific folder (downloads, documents, etc., only this user can access it.
Did this help?
Thanks rkaufmann87 for your feeback.
Actually, what you proposed is exactly where I am struggling : let me be more specific:
I have recently installed Office using my Admin user account. The Word, Excel and PowerPoint icons automatically appeared on my Dock (which is fine)
Then I opened my daugher's account, no Office icons on her Dock. AS you said in your post, I could then locate the icons in the Application folder but no way to drag them to the Dock..... The only think I can do is just dragging to the Desk...
Any thought ?
Thanks
Try this: From your daughters account launch Word from the Applications folder. After it starts up it should appear in the doc. Right or control click on the dock icon and select Options > Keep in Dock. Repeat for Excel and Powerpoint.
Dan
I'm not sure where in the Dock you are trying to drag the "W", "E", & "PP". If you are attempting to drag them to the right of the stripped line (on your desktop that is between the Preferences icon and the blue folder icon) then you are dragging to the wrong spot. Drag one next to iCal. Here is a link to a video to show you how to do it.
Thanks again for providing tips...
Actually, what the video shows works indeed very well for my own user account (Admin) or my wife account : I can drag and "stick" to the Dock any Application I want, including the new Office applications I have recently installed on my own account.
What is really strange is my daughter account : unlike the other two accounts (Admin & Wife), the Dock looks "locked" : no way to drag any application (the new Office ones or any existing application already present when I bought the Mac (Garageband, etc...). Until now, I tought that the issue was limited to Office but it appears that I face the same issue with any other applications....
Si it seems that there is a setting somewhere which prevents to "tune" the Dock for this specific user account. (daugther account)...
Hi Dan,
Tried your tip but no success.
See my last answer to rkauflann87 : seems that the Dock of my daughter is "locked" for tuning.
"Parental Control" is on for her account. Could it be the reason for that ?
Thanks
I got it !!
there was a box to tick in the Parental Control panel to allow the user (daughter) to change the Dock...
Thanks anyway for your kind support.
Yes, that was exactly the issue.
Thanks Dan.
