Kernel Panic!

I've been having kernel attacks for the past week and have tried various ways of trying to find the root of the problem, without much luck unfortunately. The latest error report is below. If anyone can take a look and see if there are any obvious signs of whats causing the kernel panic, then it would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is you have a hardware problem. I don't see any obvious software issues in your KP report. The most common causes of hardware related KP's are RAM which can mean:

Incorrect RAM (did you upgrade yours?)
Failed RAM (yes it can and does fail)

Unseated RAM (remove all and reseat)

You can download and test RAM issues using Rember.

For other hardware related issues run Apple Hardware Test, please read the advice letter VERY carefully. You will need to run AHT in Extended Mode, each pass will take 30-60 minutes. If no failures are found after the first pass you should run it in Extended Mode another 2-3 times, AHT is useful but doesn't always pick up problems so running it multiple times is the only solution. If you get any errors then your next step is an Apple Store or AASP for repair. If the machine is covered by warranty or AppleCare any hardware issue should be covered.

Other useful reading for tracking down KP's are:

About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages, How to log a kernel panic, Kernel Panics, & Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics.

Good luck and let us know what you found out.

Many thanks for your advice!

I haven't upgraded my ram, but I guess its a possibility that it has failed. Will defitnely try the Rember software you recommended to test it.

I ran AHT once and it didn't pick up any problems, but I will test it a few more times to see if it finds anything though.

Will report back once I've given everything a go, hopefully it will be something simple to fix.

Thanks again!

Yes that seems to be a RAM related error. Use Rember to see if it can locate which DIMM is causing the problem and also don't forget to remove and reseat all the RAM. This takes 10 minutes and is incredibly simple to do.

If you want you can do a full RAM upgrade, you can upgrade your system to 16GB by going to www.macsales.com (OWC) or Crucial. A 16GB upgrade will cost in the neighborhood of $90 and should eliminate your KP's because you will be replacing all of your RAM. I suggest these two vendors as their are reliable, have good prices and good support. OWC is my #1 pick because they also specialize in Macs and also provide terrific support including how-to videos for installing RAM.

I did the remove and reseat ram, quite a lot of dust had gathered up on them actually, so I don't know if that had helped contrbute to the Kernel attacks.

I then ran Rember and after a while it stated that all the tests had passed. So do you think that the RAM is stable enough to rule it out for causing the Kernel attack?

This is getting quie confusing. :/

Thanks for your help though, its very much appreciated.

If there was a lot of dust in the RAM area that could create a problem where a contact was not being made. I hoped you vacuumed out the area to eliminate the dust. It isn't a bad idea to do this 1-2x per year if your work area is dusty. The only way you will know the reseating worked was if the KP's disappear. If you get another then immediately run REMBER to see if it detects anything.

Hopefully the reseat worked, if not the next thing to do is swap out all of your RAM for new DIMM as I suggested earlier.

Well I thought my problems were over. But the panics have gotten worse if anything. The machine shuts down even when start up is normal. It happens especially if I have Safari and iTunes open together. I phoned Apple and they just made me delete the systems cache and start up items. But it's still happening. Here's the latest report that I'm getting now, hope there's some advice I can get. WIll have to phone Apple back too.

As I mentioned earIier I would recommend buying some replacement RAM and trying it out. You traced the issue to something to do with your RAM and you reseated and vacuumed the area. The only RAM that is installed is the RAM supplied by Apple so that eliminates incorrect RAM. So the only thing left is Failed RAM which can only be fixed by replacing the RAM.

Well I phoned Apple and told them the error codes I was getting, and that I would like to be sent some new RAM, but the guy on the other end said I would have to completley wipe my hard drive and reinstall the OSX to eliminate any software problems, only then would they move on to see if its the hardware to blame! I can't even run Rember now to check, because everytime I do it causes a panic. I think I'm just going to buy the RAM myself, it's cheap enough anyway.

OK, while wiping the HD and re-installing OS X doesn't do any harm chances are it didn't really do anything either other than make you feel better. Let's see how the new RAM affects the machine, I will look forward to your post on that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is all it is, if so that would be an inexpensive fix to a nasty problem.

Kernel Panic!
