My HTML page doesn't work on Safari

I'm trying to make an extremely simple HTML page using TextEdit (saving it as an .html file)

and none of my code seems to be working. It simply displays the code i typed in without having any effect.

Please help

Thank you for posting this. QuickTimeKirk really helped. So, in "preferences" in TextEdit go to "new document," choose "plain text," go to "open and save" and unclick "add '.txt' extension to plain text files." You then open a new document, write your code, and save. But when you save, you have to type in the ".html" extension. I did this and it worked, finaly.
