HELP: Autoshutdown with APC UPS

Hi guys,

I bought a UPS by APC yesterday under the impression that I can have the option to set it to AUTOSHUTDOWN whenever there is a power failure. I just don't see it in the preferences. Where can I find it? Or is it even possible 🙂

thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

If you go to Energy Saver Pane in System Preferences > UPS and then choose Shutdown Options, I get this window:

I'd think that the top option (shut down afte using the UPS battery for...) would be the closest if you choose 1 minute.

I'm not sure, but the auto shutdown may be a feature included in the enclosed CD software which mostly are only Windows compatible.

Did you connect the UPS via the enclosed USB cable to your iMac? If you did and it's still not seen try some basic reset's, first is restart in Safe Mode. This will clear some caches. If that doesn't work then reset both the SMC and PRAM by:

SMC RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
  • Wait 15 seconds.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

If none of these work then return the UPS, it probably has a bad cable or connection. One last thing DO NOT connect the USB cable to any type of hub, connect it directly to the back of the iMac.

Ahh, it seems you don't have your UPS connected to your Mac? The tab for it only shows up when you have a UPS connected and running and your Mac needs to be plugged into it as well.

Check the instructions again, plug everything in, and then restart the Mac for good measure. See if the UPS tab shows up after that.

Are you sure it doesn't have a USB port for communication? APC's specifications for the ES 500 says it does. Its port is easily confused for an Ethernet port; it uses the identical connector but the other end of the cable is USB.

Maybe you have an earlier iteration without it. Get a Back-UPS ES 550 or 750 and use your 500 for your modem and router.
