macbook pro screen won't wake up after sleep

I'm having a strange problem that just started today.

I close my macbook pro lid and put it asleep. Then when I open the lid the keyboard lights up. The screen comes on for about three seconds and everyone looks fine then the screen goes to sleep again. If I close the lid and open it again it comes on for 3 seconds and goes to sleep again.

Occasionally I can get it to stay on hitting Function and brightness keys. But just as often it takes a hard reset to get things working again. But then if I close the lid and open it the problem starts again.

Any idea?

I'm running the lastest Lion update.

Macbook PRO 15, Mac OS X (10.7)

thanks. obviously i'd like to avoid such a time-intensive move before looking at other options. 😉

To make things more intresting I've fund it ONLY does it when plugged into a charger.

AND if I briefly unplug the charger after the screen comes up black it immediately wakes up and stays on.

weird.

I've reset the SMC. But still get the same issue (if plugged in).

I am having the exact same problem. with an Early 2011 MBP with high res display and SSD option. I'm running Lion and starting about 2 weeks ago, if I shut the lid, and try and wake it up, the keyboard lights up, and the display comes on for about 3 seconds and nothing. I tried messing with the function keys as stated in the thread above and that appears to work occasionally. I haven't been able to test whether this is only a problem while plugging into the charger.

Running OSX 10.7.3 build 11D50d

I am having the exact same problem. Just seemed to start a couple weeks ago.

Purchased MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011edition in February of 2012. 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 17, 8GB/Memory 13333 MHz DDR3 / AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB/ Running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b). Only utilizing about 25 percent of storage capacity.

Seems to resolve when I unplug it, but would like a permanent fix.I have checked for updates and am completely up to date.

I am not sure what actually worked for me.

But I will like to point some observations

I thnk I downloaded some app which did not sleep on closing the MBP's lid

In that case on opening thelaptop creater the error.

I uninstalled all small, less popular apps and I was able to resolve the issue

macbook pro screen won't wake up after sleep
