can receive but not send email

I suppose this happens because my new iMac (OS 10.7.3) adds "(offline)" to the name of my outgoing server, even though I am on line. I cannot delete the addition. How can I prevent this affliction?

Select Window Connection Doctor from the Mail menu bar. You should see a green dot next to each of the mail servers you've defined. Is that what you see? If not, click the Show Details button. A drawer opens at the bottom of the window. If there's text in that drawer, please post it. If not, click Check Again and post the text that appears. The server is not negotiating a secure (SSL) connection. As a last resort, since your server admin refuses to take responsibility, try connecting without SSL. Depending on how you authenticate, that may mean that your password is sent in the clear. Your mail will certainly be transferred in the clear, but that's not so important, because email isn't really private anyway unless encrypted at the source.

Thank you for your words, but this discussion is not helpful. I have repeatedly tried deselecting SSL already, without success. My IT Services' responsibility extends to assuring me that none other of the thousands of people served have raised my complaint, though there have been other glitches in the past, and to politely reminding me that my email preferences work perfectly with my older iMac.

I could by-pass this problem by using gmail but it is tedious to open and I did not buy an expensive computer to have to change my long-standing email address.

Make a note of the settings for the problem account -- everything you need to reconstruct it, including the password.

Select all your mailboxes, and then select Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.

Delete the account, and delete the password item from your keychain in Keychain Access. Recreate the account from scratch and try again to connect.
