Beta IMessage Password and Apple ID

Hallo, I just installed the Beta IMessage on my MacBookAir. When the program request the AppleID and the password it tells me that one of both is wrong. I changed the Password and have still the same problem with the wrong password.

Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Hi,

It may not work in iChat/Messages if the password is over 16 Characters long as the Limit for the AIM servers is 16 characters.

Whilst the Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and @me.com are in fact alos Valid IDs the AIM limit on the Password length still applies.

same problem here with an iMac - tries uninstalling and reinstalling the beta, but it's had no effect.

The daft thing is it accepts my apple id and password in the previous screen, then rejects the same password on the 'iMessage password' screen.

Am i right in assuming that the iMessage password it expects is the same as my apple ID password (as that's what I'm trying to enter..)

Hi All,

This may depend on whether you have entered and Apple ID that ends with either @mac.com or @me.com and the Password length that has _ AND _ try and talk to a AIM Buddy.

Messages asks for an Apple ID as you set it up.

At this point it is a little like FaceTime in that it uses a Name rather than a Number.

From here you cac "Call" anyone in your Address Book that has an iPhone/iPad number, using the Blue + sign top right and the Contacts list.

At the same time Messages will uses all the iChat Info you had an launch the Buddy Lists you had.

An AIM Buddy List can only have a max of 16 characters to a Password. The aforementioned Apple ID s are also Valid AIM Names but will only work if the password is not too long.

Clicking on a Buddy will open any Saved Messages you had with that Buddy (Going back to the earliest saved) and place them in the Messages window using the tabbed Chat method from iChat 4 (although it now includes the Buddy iCon/Address Book Pic and the "tab" is therefore bigger).

The Messages window becomes the place where Text Chats take place.

These Text chats can be iMessages to Phones/iPads with cell coverage or Touches.

They can be good old IMs to iChat Buddies

SO....

Your Apple ID may have worked to Sign-in if the Password is over 16 characters.

However if you use that same ID and try to contact someone in the AIM Buddy list it will not work as AIM have a 16 character limit.

You can Change the "To:-" and the "From:-" by clicking the Contact's/Buddy's name.

It has always been a problem that the various Apple registration pages have said @mac.com names and MobileMe (or iCloud) @me.com names are valid AIM screen Names but have not pinted out the Password needs to be kept to no more than 16 characters.

Messages provides a cross over point that may cause problems with different logins that use the Same ID

My experiences was Download and then Install which asked for a restart of the computer afterwards.

It was after that when I went to launch the app that it asked from an Apple ID.

It was not auto-populated with the ID listed in the iCloud or the Mail, Contacts and Calendars parts of System Preferences.

The ID is not actually on my Address card in the Address Book either.

It sounds like you are not the logged in Mac User Account and that the Address Book > My Card has another person's details on there.

HI,

Are you saying that your Apple ID is based on your @gmail.com Account ?

The 16 character bit refers to names used with the AIM login.

NOTE

AIM Logins come from Apple IDs ending in @mac.com or @me.com as well as name registered at AIM

The Apple ones need to make sure you deliberately keep to the 16 character limit (An AIM registration will do so Automatically).

(Technically you can register any active email as an AIM Screen Name in their Registation Process and I have seen both Hotmail and GoogleMail emails as AIM Screen Names - but that raises a different issue.)

So...

A Googlemail ID used as an Apple ID and already used with iCloud should work in Messages beta.

In System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars do you have Messages Enabled against this Apple ID (Gmail ID) ?
