Will Mountain Lion be a free update to Lion 10.7?
Hi, I currently have OSX Lion 10.7.2 and was wondering if Mountain Lion will be a free update or paid. Thanks!

I doubt it. It will probably be a paid upgrade but I haven't seen any definite yet.

Nobody knows except Apple. But being a brand new OS then I would presume it will be a paid product as has every other Mac OS to date.
But nobody knows for sure.

Hey, thanks guys! I do see that it could be paid but really it's only a couple upgrades and tweaks to Lion. I guess we'll find out!
Historically, every time OSx has jumped a 10.x release, it's a cost item. Maintenance items 10.x.x are of course free. Since we're going from Lion 10.7 to Mountain Lion 10.8, I'd take 10 to 1 odds this will cost $30 (or 29).
Well I just got my new 15 inch 2.4 macbook pro for my x-mas present for myself so to hear I will not receive the upgrade for free is kinda a really pricy bummer.

Perhaps you could finance the $29 ?
Well I was referring to the price tag of over two grand for my new lap top where its two months old now.

Just put aside 15c/day 😉

You'll feel worse when the day arrives that MacBook's are announced 😉
By the time ML will be available publicly, you will have owned your machine at least 6 - 8 months - you really can't expect free after that much time.
I strongly believe that this will be a free upgrade for all SUPPORTED Macs already on Mac OS X Lion. Apple has moved their focus to iOS like updates for Mac. All SUPPORTED iOS devices are upgraded free. Also, Apple has started "syncing" iOS and Mac OS with iCloud (Gamecenter, iMessage, Reminders, Notes, etc.). Finally, as Apple mentioned in their Mountain Lion video it has been less than a year since the release of Lion. There is one more thing, Apple did not have a media event for this upgrade (yet) so, it's most likely not a big deal.
Its a big deal for me sadly, Lion is still somewhat buggy and I fear it always will be, and now 10.8 comes along, I don't want my main machine to be part of the IOS family. For myself its time to move on from Apple. Great machines but I liked OS X being different to IOS, now the line between both is far to blurred and seeing the same thing on every machine almost is not what I personally want, this is not innovation in my mind just assimilation, time to look for something else why my iMac still has some value.

Then please be realistic. The announcement just came out and people are already arguing over the cost or if it will be free. That will be well down the track. Just get on with using either Lion or Snow Leopard, whatever you prefer and worry about ML when it is released!

Current version of Lion is 10.7.3. The update is free.
Mountain Lion is 10.8, why would you think that it would be free?

If it turns out to be $29 like the last couple...well there's no way that's pricey at all. A whole OS for the price of a couple apps.
