Kodak Pro Photo CD

I think I know the answer to this question but I thought I would ask anyway. I have some Kodak Pro Photo CD's with images that are very important to me. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom no longer will open these disc. iPhoto will open the images but sorry, I dislike iPhoto very much. My question is will Aperture open images from Kodak Pro Photo CD?

Ideally, I would like to finely adjust and balance these images, and archive in the .dng format. I do not own Aperture but if it will help to do what I want I am willing to give it a try. Any assistance is appreciated in advance.

Definitely not a problem with the disc. Kodak stopped supporting the format a few years ago. Adobe stopped supporting the format after CS3. I still have a 'legacy' Power PC Mac computer loaded with Adobe CS2 so I can open them on that machine if necessary. But if Aperture will do the job I will give it a try. Your suggestion about the free trial was one worth exploring. Thanks. Since I plan to archive these images I want fine control of the adjustments. I think the odds of Aperture working on these files is pretty good because iPhoto works on them.

What's the file extension? Aperture will work with JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, PDF, PSD. all really standard image format files. It is surprising that iPhoto will read them yet the other apps you mentioned don't.

If you load the CD then open the Terminal app and then run [file image filename] the program will attempt to read the file and deduce the type of file that it is.

I believe that Graphic Converter (a most handy photo app to have around) is still licensed to be able to open them. Once open you can save the images to a standard folder and then import into Aperture. Buy it from the App Store.

If I can find one laying around, I will test.

You can email Thoreston Lemke and ask about Graphic Converter -- use support at lemkesoft.com. Can find at http://www.lemkesoft.com/contact.html

I was successful in opening the files with iPhoto. However, the resulting file was only 18 mb. The Kodak Pro Photo CD offers resolutions of up to 72 mb. These higher resolutions were not available when importing to iPhoto. I am soooooo glad that I dragged my feet on getting rid of my Mac G4 dual processor machine. I have been keeping it around as a legacy machine. I opened the full resolution files using an old copy of CS2. Then, I moved the files over to my MBP and opened the files in Lightroom. I exported the files a second time in the .dng format. That should keep me for a few years.
