Can't open .doc files.

I just went back to Mac and all my documents are .doc. I used to use my friends macbook and I thought I was able to open them. Please don't tell me I have to buy another program to open these. I seem to remember saving them as docx. Please someone refresh my memory.

I can open them in text edit however they are layed out differently. This is seriously inconvenient. Is there another solution?

OpenOffice (free), or MS Office 2008/2011 or Pages
