Ricoh C3501 user code setup for print

I have download the printer driver of the Ricoh MP C3501 and seem installed successfully, but just can NOT print anything.

The user code has been put into the job log field but won't work.

The RICOH Aficio MPC3501 is at the same subnet and works fine for MS-Windows users.

I found that the printer driver name is 3501PS and I think this could be refer to PostScript. Ricoh guy told me that there is no PostScript module installed in my company. Is there any other driver or script to fix this?

PAHU,

Thank you so much for your quick response.

I have download masosx/pxlmono. In the ReadMe, it says...

Tiger users should open the Printer Setup Utility and click on the Add icon at the top of the Printer List window. A new window will open. In that window, click the Default Browser icon at the top left. Highlight your printer in the section below. Use the "Print Using" pop-up menu near the bottom of the window to select the correct PPD for your printer and click Add.

But, I can NOT [Highlight your printer in the section below.] at the Default Browser, as there is no printers shown in that below session. What can be done next? Or, what I shall do next?

Cheers,

With the Ricoh not appearing in the Default Add Printer view, this would indicate that the printer does not support the Bonjour protocol. But that is okay, many office copier/printers do not support this protocol and thus you need to manually enter the details of the Ricoh. So if you know or can find the IP address of the Ricoh, then you can create a print queue by selecting the IP icon instead of the Default icon, then select the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol and then enter the IP address of the printer. You can leave the queue name blank, change the name to something more meaningful than the IP address, and leave the Location field blank as well. Then in the Print Using menu you can select the appropriate PPD as documented in the ReadMe.

Hello Bill.

Do you think the print jobs are getting from the Mac to the copier but then being rejected and not printed? As opposed to the print jobs not leaving the Mac and staying in the printer queue.

Because if they are leaving the Mac and being rejected by the copier then it will be something to do with the user codes. You should be able to check the print log on the Ricoh to see if your Mac print jobs are listed but with an error code, probably related to an incorrect code being used.

Hi! PAHU,

The user code is a correct one as I can print in previous MS-Windows using the same code.

What I found is the printing job seem going into printer, but nothing has been printed.

I have installed the printer driver downloaded from Ricoh and all of three scripts download from Matt site. Is it possible I need to remove Ricoh driver first? If yes, how?

Hi Bill,

While the user code may be correct, we still cannot be sure if the driver is compatible. So I would ask if the user code can be disabled in the copier, just temporarily, so that you can test the Mac. If you can print using the Ricoh driver or the pxlmono driver, then at least you know the issue is not the driver but something to do with the codes.

Thank you, PAHU. As this printer is used by lots of people and I'm the only one currently use Mac, the IT won't turn off the user validation funcation for me.

I think the problem is that while selecting the default printer, there is no any printers can be selected even after installing all of the Pxlmono, Foomatic and Ghostscript. I'm wondering if the Lion "ate" these scripts. Would it be possible that these script need to do some modification for the Lion?

Any suggestion?

That's a shame but understandable.

Reading the documentation on the Linux Foundation web site, the pxlmono, foomatic & Ghostscript packages are listed as supporting Lion. If you open the Print Using menu, click on "Select printer software" and type pxl in the search window, you should see the following;

  • pxlcolor
  • pxlcolor-Gestetner
  • pxlcolor-Infotec
  • pxlcolor-Lanier
  • pxlcolor-NRG
  • pxlcolor-Ricoh
  • pxlcolor-Savin
  • pxlmono
  • pxlmono-Gestetner
  • pxlmono-Infotec
  • pxlmono-Lanier
  • pxlmono-NRG
  • pxlmono-Ricoh
  • pxlmono-Savin

Do you see any of these?

PAHU, sorry for not chiming in earlier. You were posting just what I would have posted and I was away for about a week.

Bill, let's review how you have your printer set up to use the pxlmono drivers. The first step was to add it using the HP JetDirect protocol. When you went to add the printer you would have filled things out so that they looked something like:

The system should then have found the printer and configured the options:

Now that the printer has been added, you should be able to go to Print & Fax, hightlight your printer and see that your have the PXL driver chosen:

You then run the script to change the UserCode. Then when you go to print, you make sure that your user code is set and selected under Printer Features -> Job Log:

Does your system and your procedures match what I have shown?

Thanks for your help Matt. I knew you were away via another forum so as soon as I saw your reply today for the Epson post I just had to get your advise on this one.

I notice the PPD name you show appears to be different to what I posted, which I got from the pxlmono package notes. Has there been a change or is what I posted a set of headings and there is a subset of PPDs for each respective model entry?

It can get confusing. The names you posted are the names of the drivers as shown on this OpenPrinting page. Each driver supports a number of printers.

The PPDs that are included in the pxlmono package are generated from the Foomatic PPD generator and either pxlmono or pxlcolor is appended to the model name to show which driver package it comes from. You can see this in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj. You will find PPDs with names such as Ricoh-Aficio_MP_C3501-pxlcolor-Ricoh.ppd.gz. The other entry--what is shown in the Print & Fax window--is the NickName as it appears in the PPD.

*NickName: "Ricoh Aficio MP C3501 PXL"

Clear as mud. 😕

Thank you so much, Matt.

After installed all of the script, I tried to re-install the printer and get almost the same except the last step.

I seem can NOT type in my user code and can ONLY SELECT one. But, all of the selection are "none, 1001, 1002, 1003" and none of these are my user code.

I installed all of three scripts downloaded from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/pxlmon o for LION.

Please advise what I shall do next? Or, did I miss anything?
