Very little is known about Mountain Lion 10.8 as it was just released to developers today. We will have to wait until Apple provides an official release on system and technical requirements.
You will not have to buy Lion to upgrade to Mountain Lion

You need at least Snow Leopard to install Moutain Lion.

How do you actually go about requesting the free upgrade???
What free upgrade are you referring to?
The free upgrade to Mountain Lion is only for those who purchased a Mac on, or after June 11, 2012.

You'll need to wait until Mountain Lion is released for sale.

Ah ok i thought it had been released already my bad...thanks!
You cannot download OS X Lion 10.7.x now anyway, Apple have removed OS X Lion completely from the Mac App Store you have to upgrade straight to the OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 if you have at least OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. But beware of what you may be looking forward too with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 as reading many reviews people with older Macs that are compatible with Mountain Lion they arent being able to use such operations like AirPlay Mirroring via Apple TV etc.
And for people who are qualified for the 'Free Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8' you have to go to the Apple Website and request a free copy.
Hope this helps and enjoy OS X Mountain Lion, I sure am 🙂
I have Snow Leopard v 10.6.8 on my iMac and it will not allow me to download Mountain Lion. says it is not compatible but iMac was bought in 2008 and Apple say iMacs 2007 upwards can have the upgrade..... any help or ideas please??
DellBell,
Check your model and find out when it was made. If you bought it in 2008, but was an older model for some reason they may be the cause. That is what it sound slike.
