I would hope the Original Poster figured this out in the last three years since posting.
Cheers

Are you talking about reading an external hard drive? If so, and since you say HP, does that mean this is a hard drive associated with a Windows PC? If it is formatted for Windows, Mac OS X may read it, sometimes refuses, but can't write to it.
Hi Thanks so much
Yes, it is an external dard drive... and sometimes, I can read it , and now for instance, I can't;
it doesn't get read, and I have no idea of what I can do ... and why it occurs ..since there were times when Mac could read it....
If you know what I should do, )'d appreciate if you could tell me...thanks so much
You can reformat it so that both a PC or a MBP can read/write to it by using Disk Utility. Go to the ERASE option and select MS-DOS (FAT) or Ex-Fat. If you are going to use it only for your MBP, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the proper format.
If you want to retain the data, back it up first!
Ciao.
Hi
Thanks
Im' actually going to use it for Windows and Mac, for both
What do you mean by reformating? Should I still reformat it if I use the gard drive for both windows and mac?
Thanks again

Is it an USB drive? Is is self-powered or bus-powered? If it's bus-powered, that might be the issue. Some drives require at some points more power than the MBP's USB port supplies.

This means it is NOT a formatting issue. You do not need to reformat the drive.
One good possibility has been mentioned by fane_j. I make it a point these days to purchase only portable drives, which are fully powered by the USB port. I also tend to avoid the crummy drives they sell at places like Best Buy, although I did recently find a good G-drive in the Mac section of my local Best Buy.
Also, it's possible you've got a bad cable, or a bad port on either the Mac or the drive itself. If moving the drive while it's connected sometimes causes it to disappear, that's likely the source of the trouble.
Finally, it's always possible that your drive is starting to fail. Do you have its contents backed up on other drives?

I actually have the same problem, then 1 day I found a 7 years old hard-disk and i try to but i file inside, surprise, it works. So i remember when one of my friend told me many years ago FAT32 and NTFS format.
Thanks pete, you are right!
Maybe for someone else have this problem, tomorrow 🙂 !!
Cheers!.,
