Q: upon startup my OS does not always connect to the internet

I am having this issue both with my home iMac and my work iMac - two separate locations - one uses Airport Utility, the other does not. Upon startup, either having been shut down or in sleep mode, I'm not always connected to the internet. I either have to restart or go into newtwork diagnostics to make it happen.

Any suggestions? Is this common?
