Mac book pro starts up but screen stays black. I have tried taking the battery out, waiting over night it still is black any ideas?

That sounds like the "black screen of death." Visit your local Apple Store/Genius Bar, and they will be able to diagnose the problem - likely a hardware issue - and recommend a repair.
