Your best course of action is probably to contact the sender and ask him/her to resent the file in a version you can open. AppleWorks can produce word processing, spreadsheet, paint, draw, or presentation files, ALL of which use the .cwk extension.
Depending on the version of AW used, the user should have the ability to save WP files in MS Word format (.doc), and SS files in MS Excel format (.xls).
AppleWorks was discontinued in 2004. The current versions at that time were 6.2.9 for Mac and 6.2.2 for Windows. The windows version of AppleWorks 6 was distributed and licensed to only the Education market.

Has the issue been solved?
If not, and we're talking about a single file, you're welcome to send it to me for conversion to Word format, if possible. Please include "AppleWorks file" in the subject line.
My address is available by clicking my name above this message.

Feb 20, 2012 8:02 AM in response to Barryby psadair,Thanks.
I was able to find my Appleworks 6 disc and open the files on my computer.
I wish that Appleworks 6 was still available for Macs and PCs for those who like it. It has some great graphic options that MS Word does not have. (I was lucky to still have the disc.) Even if I tried to convert that file to MS Word, I would not have been able to convert the graphics. (It was a special certificate with some border and other graphics.)

You might be able to extract the graphic elements from the certificate and use those to create a similar certificate using Word, or using MS Publisher, which is also a part of the Office suite in the Windows version of Office.
Or you might investigate the current edition of Print Shop (still around, but apparently on the Windows version) or PrintMagic, both from Broderbund. Other similar software is out there as well.
