How do I check for viruses with OS 10.6.8

I know that my operating system has built in virus protection, but is there a way to perform a virus check? If not, any suggestions as to the most effective, easiest software that will perform that function?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

There is trojan checks in OS X on your downloads, but no virus checks.

There currently isn't any OSX viruses, but your Mac can transfer Windows viruses and to eliminate those (and if a Mac virus should appear) the free ClamXav is currently pretty good choice as it's not always running and messing up your system.

Apple likes to make a lot of top down changes and always on anti-virus breaks the machine.
