Remote not working on iPhone 4S

I just got the message "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account *************@****.com."

The problem is home sharing is turned on on both the Apple TV and in iTunes in my computer. Before I got this message, the remote app was timing out when trying to connect to the Apple TV. What can I do to make the remote app on my iPhone 4S see this? FYI I also hava an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) on which the remote app is working properly.

I'm running iTunes 10.5.3 on a Macbook Pro 2.53Ghz Intel Core Duo, an iPhone 4S, and an Apple TV (1st Gen) running OS 3.0.2.

Thank you

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

Thanks for your response.

But if this problem was caused by interference from other networks or household electrical items, wouldn't both the iPhone 4S AND the iPod Touch (2nd Gen) be effected? The Remote app is working perfectly fine on the iPod. At 1st, I thought the iPohone wasn't working because I had started controlling the Apple TV using the iPod, but tried to launch Remote App on the iPohone to pause play--I fugured maybe the problem was both the iPod and the iPhone couldn't be connected to the Apple TV at the same time. But it turns out that is not the case, the iPhone won't connect even if the iPod is turned off.

Any other ideas?

You may well be correct, however different devices can be affected differently by interference, generally a difference in location can be quite significant, however I assume you are using the phone from the same place as the iPad.

Is the phone using the same network as the iPod.

Have you tried restarting the network router and the phone.

Both the iPod and iPhone are being used at the same location (I literally stand in the exact same spot) and via the same network (an apple extreme 802.11N 1st gen). I restarted the router. I restarted the iPhone. Same result.

When I launch the remote app on the iPhone, the 1st screen that pops up says "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account *********@****.com." Because home sharing is already turned on on both iTunes on my computer and the Apple TV, the only option is to select the "settings" icon at the top right corner of the iPhone screen. That brings up a window labelled "Settings" with "Home Sharing" already switched to "on" and an option just below it "Add an iTunes Library." When I select "Add an iTunes Library," I get a screen labelled "Add Library" with a Passcode 6438. Underneath, it says "To add an iTunes library, open iTunes on your computer and select "Device Name" from the Devices list." I can't do this because this device is already connected to the iTunes Library on my computer.

Yes, I agree. "Adding an iTunes Library" will not solve the problem. Thank you for trying to help. Do you have any other ideas why the remote app would tell me to turn on home sharing and then also recognize that home sharing is switched on on the next screen?

The iPhone is most definitely on the same network as the Apple TV, computer, and iPod. I have restarted the router, updated firmware, restarted the iPhone. Any other ideas?

Thanks again.

Just tonight I encountered the same problem with the remote app on my iPhone 4. The app used to work but stopped. I got the same message "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account *********@****.com." even though home sharing WAS turned on in both devices.

Restarting my router (i.e. pulling the plug for 30 seconds) just worked for me, but I see you've done that already.

I hope it works out for you.

I have restarted my router (pulling the plug for 30 seconds) multiple times. Still the same result.

I deleted the remote app from the iPhone and reinstalled it. I turned on home sharing by inputing my account name and password. That brings me to a screen that says:

"To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer."

"To control Apple TV: Select Turn On Home Sharing from Computers on the main menu of Apple TV."

Home sharing is already turned on in the computers section on the main menu of the Apple TV, so the iTunes library I want the iPhone to control is listed at the top of the list under "Computers." If I select the only other option in that list, "Add Shared iTunes Library," the Apple TV brings me to a screen that says "To stream iTunes content to your Apple TV, open iTunes and select Apple TV from the Devices List. You will need to enter this passcode: 65885."

In the Airtunes section of the Apple TV, the Airtunes speaker is turned on and "control from speakers" is set to on. None of these settings has changed, ever. Again, the remote app on my iPod still functions perfectly using these settings.

Any ideas?

I just selected "Forget all remotes" from the "Devices" tab in "Preferences." I then repaired the remote app on the iPhone with iTunes on my computer. It worked to pair the remote app with iTunes on the computer, but I'm still not paired with the Apple TV. On the iPod, when I select the source list in preferences in the remote app, it brings me to a screen that has an icon for the Apple TV and and an icon for the iTunes library on my computer. But on the iPhone, there is only the icon for the iTunes library on my computer listed.

On the iPod, Home Sharing was turned off, yet it controls the Apple TV perfectly.

When I go to the General tab under settings on the Apple TV, and go into the "Remotes" section, it brings me to a screen with 3 choices:

1. Unpair/Pair Apple Remote (iPhone & iPod touch Remotes)

2. My iPod (Other Remotes) with the linked symbol next to it

3. Learn Remote

1. When I select Unpair/pair Apple Remote, a picture of a transmitting Apple TV remote appears-I assume this is just for Apple TV style remotes, not iPods or iPhones simce this doesn't effect the iPhone when I select it.

2. When I select "My iPod," it brings me to a screen that syas "Remove My iPod: Removing this remote prevents it from controlling your Apple TV." I don't remember having to go through the Apple TV to synce the iPod with it, but here it is, listed in the remotes section of the Apple TV, while my iPhone is not listed.

3. When I select Learn Remote, a screen pops up that says: "Before you start, choose an unused device setting on your other remote. Then select Start using your Apple TV remote." I assume this is to train a learning remote to function with the Apple TV.

I just want to make sure, is more than 1 iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc allowed to control a single Apple TV?

Does anyone have any ideas why the iPhone would be able to control iTunes on my computer, but not be able to control the Apple TV? Again, everything is on the same network and operating in the same location.

Is there a compatibility issue between Apple TV (1st gen) running ios 3.0.2 (the most recent update) and an iPhone 4S running the most recent version of Remote App?

Apple TV (1st generation)

  1. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Apple TV also connected to.
  2. Open the Remote app on your mobile device.
  3. Select Add an iTunes Library in the Remote settings screen. Remote will then display a 4 digit passcode.
  4. On Apple TV, select Settings from the main menu, select General and then Remotes.
  5. Select the name of your iPhone or iPod touch.
  6. Enter the 4 digit passcode. Use the volume up/down keys on the Apple Remote (Infrared) to change the number that is displayed and the track next/back keys to switch digits.
  7. Click Done.

Remote app will be paired with Apple TV and you can begin browsing your library using Remote and select a piece of content to play.

Hello,

I had the same problem between my Windows Itunes and Iphone Remote setup. My itunes never showed up Devices section.

My network setup was like this.

I was connecting my iphone to my router by wifi. But my computer was connected to the same router with LAN cable. I was assuming that they were using the same network. Actually they should have done so. But I think they were not. I plugged a USB wireless ethernet to my computer and connected to my router via Wifi and then suddenly it started to work.

Is this certanly the way it works? Shoud all the devices including the PC connected to the router via Wifi? Isnt't there a way to make the devices think they're on the same network even if the PC is connected with a LAN cable? I remember I was able to use it like this if I'm not wrong.

Any suggestion? Do I have to use a wireless connection from my desktop PC all the time to able to use the Remote app and the home sharing?

Thanks...
