If I purchase an iphone from the Apple store, can I connect to the metroPCS network?

If your iPhone is iPhone 4 on Verizon, it can be flash to metro pcs but only calls and text will work. Internet wifi will work but not 3G on metro pcs.
No, it can not. The phone is permanently tied to Verizon.
