Q: Upgrade OS X 10.2.8 to OS X 10.5

I've got a PPC G4 (Sawtooth) in which I've just successfully installed a NewerTech G4/1.6GHz processor upgrade.  I've got to upgrade and install memory and I plan to go to 1Gb minimum - probably 2Gb. I now have to upgrade from 10.2.8 and, from what I read, I understand that I can't go to Snow Leopard because that requires an Intel chip.

Is 10.5 as "far as I can go"? and what is the path that will get me there from 10.2.8?  Is it a series of OS installs or can I go directly to 10.5?

Thank you!

Yes 10.5 is as far as you or any PPC Mac can go.

Then you can update to 10.55.8 for free...

Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

    minimum system requirements

        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

        * DVD drive for installation

        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

You can upgrade direct to OS 10.5, skipping OS 10.3 & 10.4. Even though you have upgraded the processor speed, the bus speed on the AGP remains slow. So Leopard will be somewhat slow. Are you wanting to upgrade to Leopard so you can use iTunes 10.5, which is necessary for syncing an iPhone or iPad?

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD

    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD

MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

MB022Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

The DVD should look like this

    leopard.jpg

Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

    Thanks BDAqua,

You've confirmed my thinking and added points necessary for me to successfully make this upgrade.  (I'm just having a problem finding OS X 10.5 at a price I'm willing to pay.  Objective of this whole process was to pass this mac along to a grandparent.  Email system to which they have access would not support necessary browser in 10.2.8.

Thanks again for your prompt response!

Same thanks to you Texas Mac Man.

(I thought my response would be vieweable only by the original sender and didn't mean to fail to thank you at the same time.)  It looks like, with help of "you guys" I'm on the right path and on my way.

    Thanks again!
