I am getting error (406) only when trying to play movies or TV shows on my Apple TV through iTunes. My files are stored on my Time Capsule. Seeing as music files play ok I took this to indicate a streaming speed issue on my wireless network. So I have just tried changing my wireless network over to run just from the Airport base station but this hasn't worked either.
My next test was to upload a film onto my iPhone and try playing it from there. This created an error "Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content." This is despite my Apple TV and iPhone using the same Apple ID/iTunes account, sharing being activated and the relevant film having played fine from iPhone to Apple TV before. Again music streams to the Apple TV fine from iPhone. Also tried using shared library content but same error.
Seeing as this film played fine before in this method and the only change since then is an Apple TV update, I think, it maybe an Apple TV issue?
I think I may have to contact Apple to see if they can work this one out!
Sorted, load your computer's library (Home sharing account) within Apple TV and select the movie, TV show or music you want to play and viola. It is almost as if the Apple TV couldn't recognise that the file being sent to it from the computer is the same but either way, it means you can view your selected media on your TV instead of through your laptop. It does mean it maybe a bit slower loading but streamed plenty quick enough that there were no visible delays in an HD movie.
Hope this helps
Had the same problem here. What solved the problem was a restore of the Apple TV. Not sure if a reset would have done the trick as well. Power cycling the device did not work.
