Hi Ralph

I finally solved the problem... I'm not completely sure how though but you certainly helped, thanks!

All of your instructions above were fine. I had Read & Write access to all.

I ended up contacting Apple Support and spent an hour there without any success. What we did discover though was that if I created a new user account and then logged in to FaceTime or iMessages that they worked. Obviously something to do with my acount.

What I then ended up doing (and I think this is what may have fixed it all) was copying both com.apple.imagent.plist and com.apple.FaceTime.plist from the new user Preferences folder to my normal user folder. After I logged off and back on again all was fine.

Does any of that make sense?

May 30, 2012 11:39 AM in response to userid42

Hi,

Yes that does make some sense.

The Issue can be seen as a set of possibles.

The most likely is the Non Access by your Mac User Account to the .plist (your can't Read it)

It is possible that you can't Write to it so any changes made to the Preferences don't "take".

It is possible you don't Own It or have the Correct Read and Write permissions for the Folders the .plist is in.

After checking those we would be looking at corrupt Files and checking if an App works in another (test) Mac User account would be the way to go.

From there you have two options:-

1) Delete the said .plists and then restart the App to recreate them from defaults

2) Move some working .plists if you used the same FaceTime or iChat/Messages names in the "Test" Account.

Restoring the App in some form would only work if we managed to prove the App did not work (In all Mac User Accounts)

Glad to hear of your success.

I'm having a Mac Pro Early 2008 edition which to which I haven't attached any webcam.

So there is no question of getting FaceTime to work.

But somehow I'm not able to get my iMessage to work. Tried all your steps but failed.. 😟

Infact there is no process called IMAgent in my "Activity Monitor" and thus no plist file for the same.

What could be the reason??

And is there any way I can uninstall this iMessage and get my previous iChat back then atleast i can chat with my facebook & gtalk friends....

Hi,

Try the Uninstall option in the Messages Menu.

IMAgent is a support app stored in the Hard Drive/Library/Frameworks/IMCore

It is supposed to start when the Computer does as for iChat/Messages and FaceTime it provides Off Line Listening for FaceTime Calls and iChat Off Line IMs

Of course FaceTime can be set to "Off" in it's Preferences so it does not Listen and so can iChat/Messages but neither will stop IMAgent from launching.

Oh My,

My Fault.

Should be Hard Drive/System/Library/Frameworks where you will find an Alias.

This Alias actually points to the Hard Drive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks where the IMCore.framework has been moved to for iChat 6 and FaceTime.

My apologies again for the misdirect.

All of the above failed for me but thanks to Ralph I did some checking and long story short, ownership was not what it should have been. This worked for me:

Open Terminal

cd ..

ls

sudo chown -R username username

after typing 'ls" above you can see the user folder names which match your short username

(replace username with your user's shortname, same as the user folder name)

took about 10 minutes for me. Reopened Messages and no more problems.

Hi Colin,

There are ways that you can do it in the Finder via the Info Panel (Get Info on File or Folder)

However it does take a long time to describe the steps.

Your way may help people who are confident with Terminal methods.

Hi,

It may pay for this to be asked in the iPad or iPhone Communities as it is, for you, about Messages on an iOS 5.x.x device.

Although the functions are similar and in fact as your state some of the messages about errors appear to be the same they are in fact different.

For a start I would be tempted to delete the Apple ID for Settings > Messages > received At > Caller ID and then re-add it.

I have did every possible fix you have posted here Ralph and unfortunately, i still cant get my iMessages beta nor my Facetime on my mac to work. I still get the could not sign in error.

In addition, the com.apple.imagent.plist really didnt recreate for me when i deleted it, force quit the imagent on activity monitor, even did a restart on my mac then tried logging in again. I checked the plist if it was recreated but still none. I have the com.apple.imagent.plost.lockfile still there. Is this of any importance?
