maybe yes, maybe no. some parts may work well, someparts may get screwy. no way to tell.
If FCE's solid performance is a central issue, don't upgrade. If you can live with the potential of a screwed up program, go ahead.

If you already have FCE installed on Snow Leopard, and then upgrade to Lion, you should be ok. However, the operative words are "should be." You may encounter gremlins with FCE running on Lion.
If you have Lion installed first, you will not be able to install FCE unless you get into some unsupported & undocumented workarounds.
Note, FCE was discontinued last June and it is not supported on Lion.
I had FCE 4.0.1 installed on Snow Leopard and did an upgrade to Lion afterwards. I haven't encountered any problems in running FCE 4 on my iMac 27". No "should bes" or "maybes" in my case, the program is doing its work just as before.
I am in the same boat... although your post is somewhat old. I installed Snow Leopard on another partition to boot into when I use FCE (I only use FCE once a month if that). That way, I know it will work with no shoulds and maybes.

It would appear that most reports of Gremlins and Problems with running FCE on Lion are greatly exaggerated. I'm running FCE 3.5 without any hiccups on Lion.
And my installtion path was not an upgrade from Snow-Leopard, but a brand new machine with Lion pre-installed and a migration from my previous Snow-Leopard machine.
I'm not very fond of Lion in many ways, in fact some things are outright annoying, but FCE runs as well as on any previous platform.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really appreciate it. That brings me to another question. Now, Mountain Lion is out. Huh.. who'd a thought right? I've been afraid to install Lion, so I never did because of the uncertainty. Any issues with Mountain Lion that you know of? I'm assuming I can skip over Lion and just go directly to Mountain Lion, right? Technology happens faster than a conversation. Wow, I wonder what they'll have this afternoon!

I am using FCE HD 4.0.1 with Lion (10.7.4) on a separate Thunderbolt drive and it works ok. However the speed is not as fast as before. All else seems to work.
Can any of our resident experts express a view as to whether Mountain Lion will still work our lovely programme or affect it detrimentally.
Bernd,
How did you do the install on a new machine? I just got my new laptop and when I insert the disk is tells me that:
"PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
Or does anyone else know how to get around this?
Thanks in Advance!

Try the Escape key.
Fingers crossed.

I recently installed FCE4 to mountain Lion 10.8.1 to an MBPro. A CLEAN Install.
Update to 4.0.1 went smoothly.
To my surprise it works fine and am testing with a twenty minute AVCHD timeline.
Editing, effects and transitions work as expected so far. 🙂
Please feed back with your Mountain LION experience.

i tried holding "esc" when i click on the installer but it again states that 10.8 doesn't support PowerPC applications.
Apple better put out a new installer for this otherwise I'll be pretty peeved...
I have done a clean install of Mountain Lion on my mid 2010 Macbook Pro.
I have the original 4.0 Final cut Express disk. If I install this 4.0 on a mountain lion mac, will I get an option to update to 4.01 via update or am I stuck on 4.0?
Thanks
Unfortunately, FCE was discontinued over a year ago. There are no further updates beyond v4.0.1 (even that was released way back in 2008) and there is no reason to think Apple will suddenly update the installer for a discontinued product.

Did you read my post in this thread?
Be aware that FCE and the Lions are not supported by Apple and unexpected results can occur, meaning users have to either live with the problem or sort it out themselves. 🙂

Thanks for your reply, Alchroma. Just to confirm -- what you did was install 4.0 in mountain lion, and even though final cut express is not supported in mountain lion, an 4.01 update appeared in the appstore, which allowed you to update to 4.01 from 4.0?
thanks
