I have just moved f rom an android phone where you had to use an app killer to stop apps constantly running and draining your battery and your web usage, do I need it on the iPhone?

Nope, on your home screen of the iphone, double tap the home button and you will find the apps running in the backround. Also when they come up, hold down on the app till it wiggles, and tap on te "X" to close it.

That's not correct. Unless the app is specifically designed to run in the background(very few are), NONE of the apps shown there are actually running.
No. Nor do you need to do what Colby85 is suggesting except in rare circumstances. Almost all of the apps that are displayed when you double tap the Home button are not using any resources. They are in a suspended state. Generally, the only apps that are running are ones that are playing music or actively using location services.
