Share Printer Time Capsule-iPad-Internet

Hi.

I am quite new to Apple world and not quite a techie.

Recently I bought Time Capsule and the main purpose is to be able share printer and share external drive.

Printer Canon MP240 connected to USB hub-Time Capsule.

I am able to print from my MacBook.

But when I try to print document from my iPad, I get message "No AirPrint Printers Found". Sounds does not make sense.

Did I missed some setting in my Time Capsule?

My second question, if I am not in the same wifi with my time capsule, can I print to the printer connected to time capsule i.e. via web, http ?

Thanks.

Sandy

Nope, you didn't miss any settings on your Time Capsule (TC). iOS devices, like your iPad, use AirPrint to submit print jobs to network printers. A number of newer printers coming out now are AirPrint-ready. Unfortunately, connecting a non-AirPrint-ready printer to the USB port of the TC does not make it AirPrint-ready.

You do have a workaround until you do eventually get an AirPrint-ready printer and that is to use a third-party application, like Printopia.

I am assuming that you are referring to your iPad again ... correct? Again, the same problem would be true. However, if you are talking about a Mac or PC, and you want to print to the printer attached to the TC from the Internet, then this is possible.

Regarding my second question.

Yes, how to send document to printer attached to TC from the internet?

You basically have one method to print from the Internet to your Time Capsule (TC) and that is by using a Dynamic Global Host Name.

  • Get a DDNS account and Dynamic Global Host Name from a DDNS service provide, like DynDNS. You can elect for either a paid or free version based on your networking requirements.
  • Setup DDNS on your Time Capsule (TC). (Note: AirPort Utility 5.6 is being used for this example.)
  • AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Time Capsule tab > Edit...
  • Use dynamic global hostname (checked)
  • Hostname: dyndns.com
  • User: <enter your DynDNS user account name>
  • Password: <enter your DynDNS user account password>
  • Click on Done.
  • AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Printers
  • Share printers over the Internet using Bonjour (checked)
  • Click on Update.
  • In OS X go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
  • Click on the plus button to add a new printer.
  • Add Printer > IP
  • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
  • Address: <enter your DynDNS dynamic global host name>
  • Print Using: <select the appropriate driver or printer model for your printer>
  • Click on Add.
