You're right to be wary - search MacKeeper on these forums and avoid like the plague. Also have a look here:

CleanMyMac seems to be OK, but here will be plenty of people on here telling you that you don't need it as the Mac does a good job of tidying up itself.

thanks paul, i meant to click on solved problem as i did with noondaywitch, sorry. also don't think i completely downloaded mackeeper. started to and chickened out before i hit the final button but got a message today that it could clear up all my problems. question is if i didn't download it all the way can i just trash the thing i have waiting in my application folder and be done with it or must i go thru the whole long uninstall process?

likewise don't think i completely set up clean my mac and right now it isn't in my apps folder that my old eyes can see. use find, and just trash or what?

thanks again for the quick response and info.

Don't worry about marking me as the 'solver' - I'm happy to share with noondaywitch 🙂.

Given the notoriety MacKeepr has, it would be worth spending a few minutes ensuring that it hasn't secreted any garbage on your Mac. You can download a free app could EasyFind which seems to do a better job of finding files than Spotlight. Search anything MacKeeper or Zeobit and delete it.

I'd be less worried about CleanMyMac, although I don't need it I have got it and have used it once in a while without problems.

once again thanks for more info. what i am still not clear on is if i haven't installed mackeeper can i just drag the icon of the open box [in one case] and the mackeeper icon in my app folder. i somehow downloaded two copies of mackeeper. clicked on one and it was put into my app folder. then i decided to use it and clicked on it and it started asking for email address and stuff. while i put an address in i didn't finish installing or hitting the button that would have probably got it completely installed.

checked the email address i gave it and no notice from them that i had completed the install or any other info. makes me hope it is still un installed.

given the givens should i use the apple help writer "how to uninstall mackeeper" on one or both of them or just hope that dragging them to the trash will suffice?

one of the many great things about apple is this support communities and folks like you and paul. have been rescued from my stupidity by others and you guys. thanks again

My guess is that if you clicked on the installer MacKeeper has scattered files around your drive in the locations indicated in the 'uninstalling' link I posted earlier. Certainly trash any MacKeeper apps/installers/icons that you can see in the Applications folder or elsewhere and then go through the instructions in the link. It shouldn't take long and that way you should completely eradicate it.

There is also a free app called EasyFind that you can download. Use it to search for any references to MacKeeper or Zeobit and delete anything it finds.

Information here, but you can also download it from the Mac App Store:
