You've posted in the Tiger forum, but you don't say what actual version of Mac OS X you're running. If it's not Tiger, then you shouldn't be posting here, especially if you want qualified people to see it and respond.

Which file types are you trying to open? Be specific. Also, when did this problem first start?

If you have any screen shots you can post in your reply to illustrate what you see happening, that would also be helpful.

Hi Kirt

thanks for the response

Tiger iBook G4, 4.1 have used this since 2005 without any problems.

Specifically when I save any i.e postings from creaigslist , reciepts i copy and save to my desk top when I go to open them there is no application set to automatically open.

this happened about a month ago, should it be google? as the window says no application set to open these and to chose an application., It always worked by double clicking just do not know the previous application,

If you're saving Craigslist posts (as an example), you're either printing them as PDF files, or saving them as .html or text documents. Whichever one you're doing, you'd have to open them using a compatible application. For PDF files that would be Skim, Preview, or Adobe Reader; for .html files that would be Safari, Firefox, or other browser of your choice, and for text files, it would be TextEdit or (God forbid!), Microsoft Word or another text editor.

One you pick one for the file type you're dealing with, you can do a Get Info on that file and change the application that opens each specific type of file so that it's the same for all files with that extension.

Well, it looks like you got a screen shot, since the email I just got notifying me of a response to this thread showed this image you posted:

What it shows is an RTF file (rich text format), which is supposed to default to opening with TextEdit. So if your's isn't for some reason, you can make it the default by selecting the file (not when it's open) and Get Info (Command-I):

User uploaded file

Where it says 'Open with:', you can choose from the pop-up menu which application you want to open RTF files, and once you do that, you can click on the 'Change All…' button to make all RTF files open automatically with TextEdit.

The same procedure applies to any other file type, too.
