Upgrading to Lion

I want to upgrade my Macpro's operating system (Snow Leopard) to the Lion OS. I'd like to know if it is recomended to remove programs which no longer will work with the new OS or does it remove them automatically as it upgrades? Any advice or recomendation would be greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

No, it shouldn't remove incompatible programs. At least it didn't when I upgraded. Lion will simply put a white circle with a white diagonal slash over the app's icon.

I still have quite a few apps marked with white slashed circles in my Applications folder, waiting for the day that I finally give up on ever seeing a Rosetta-type solution and pull the chain on them.

Hi ...

Apps are not removed automatically when upgarding to Lion.

Definitely read this user tip > Lion upgrade questions: Apple Support Communities

Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements:

  • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • 2GB of memory
  • OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
  • 7GB of available spare

If you look in your System Profiler, it will show you what applications you have that are "Power PC".

These will no longer work in Lion...

In your Utilites folder open up "System Information"....

On the left sidebar click on "Applications" under the Software heading....

This will bring up all your application information in a window.

Look at the "Kind" column......

Any with Power PC will not work in Lion.... Universal will work along with Intel or course.

That should give you an idea of what programs you have the won't work.

I don't have the DivX on my machines...

I wouldn't think it would make a difference if you got rid of the Power PC versions. They won't work anyway.

I would think that the other Intel version would still work...

You really don't have any other choices but to get rid of the Power PC versions...

I still have some Power PC versions on my computer and they certainly aren't hurting anything..

Like AppleWorks, etc....

Someday I will delete them but just haven't done it yet.

Thanks Michael, I appreciate your advice. Will check that and ofcourse the back up. I gues to an external hardrive such as the "GDRIVE" slime? It was given to me last Christmas and I have not used it.

You're welcome.

Yes, that external HDD should work just fine for a Time Machine backup. Start using it immediately! Having current backups (preferably more than one) is essential.
