Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
I got this several times on my Time machine error messages in the past 2 weeks. Bought a new 1TB drive, initialized it and it worked successuflly for 2 days now back to the same problem. Any one have any ideas?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
Is it by any chance a Seagate GoFlex drive?
No It is a samsung in a LaCie case
The drive should be connected directly to a built-in port on the Mac, not to a hub. Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends, and that the connectors and shielding are not damaged. Try a different cable and a different port.

Moved the USB to direct and not through powered hub and it work OK. Thanks. Now I am without a direct port on th MAC. O Well I will figure that out if I need one
Wewll it is back again. Same error message. it is like it cannot find the previous backup and is trying to start a new backup folder?
It sounds like your backup drive is malfunctioning. Either that, or your Mac is.
In Discussions, do a search, "An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
Many are having this issue; doubtful it's a drive failure. It's happening with USB and FW drives, of several different makes and models; with MBs and Minis and iMacs. "Pondini" has an excellent troubleshooting web page, but it doesn't solve this particular error message; nor does the Apple "Time Machine Troubleshooting" web page. I've tried several fixes and the problem has persisted for 2 or 3 months. I think my ext HD would have failed by now if that were the case.
Well It looks like I am not alone. I will wait for Apple or someone to figure out the fix
Yes David I noticed the same thing. I also noticed people who claim to have started experiencing this problem only after upgrading from 10.6 to 10.7.
I think the issue is complicated because there are multiple things that can cause the same issue, along with 'fixes' that get things working again for a little while, then break again later
I've just, today, upgraded(?) to 10.7 and am getting this message. I haven't tried any of the suggested fixes yet. I'll let y'all know if anything works.
Ejected the drive, disconnected the USB and that worked - for half a day! I note that Polly Hall's original post has had 420+ viewings since February 2012. Apple, why has nothing been done about it yet?
I use a Lacie Porche Design backup disc directly on a Mac USB port, no problems until 19th June - now ALWAYS get this message with none of the fixes working - Drive is still viewable and accessible within finder but not apparently within Time Machine. Did anyone ever sort out what its about?
I use the same LaCie Porsche Design 1TB drive, also connected directly to a USB port on my MacBook Air. This drive is brand new, just connected it two days ago. It worked fine for the first backup, then I got the "error occurred while creating the backup folder" message. I find that If I disconnect everything and do a restart, it will once again do one backup and on the second one, I get the same error message. This is quite consistent.
Here's what I did. Erased the removable drive, then got a message saying that the drive couldn't be mounted so I let it think about it for a few days. Plugged it back in to the computer and off it went doing time machine backups. It has continued to do them for hourly etc for two days.
