Well, the options are: either publish your Japanese ebook through the U.S. iBookstore or publish an .epub file from your own website (most sellers don't do this because of DRM complications), or just don't publish your Japanese ebook for Apple devices at all. I figure it's better to at least sell it through the U.S. store than to not sell it at all. Unfortunately, publishers are at Apple's mercy and since Apple hasn't provided any means of publication your only choices are to take matters into your own hands or give up entirely. And giving up is lame.

You do know that selling in the Japan store requires a different process than simply selling in the US store if you wish to claim full profits, right?

Fulfilling the J tax documentation is not a simple task that can take months to complete.

Sure. It's understandable that the legalities differ from one country to the next. But if we're discussing the option to either publish in the U.S. store or not publish at all then it's pretty black and white, isn't it? And if iBooks Japan becomes fully operational next month, then that's great and you can publish your work there too. But for now that is not the case. Speaking from the standpoint of a customer, if you are offering a Japanese iBook that I want and I know that it is available in the U.S. iBookstore, I will happily purchase it with my U.S. Apple ID, read it, and enjoy it. And you will profit from my purchase.

Well, I tried to do that with language "jpn", but rejected. Apple support replied me that the following languages are not suported as of now.

Persian, Old (ca.600-400 B.C.)

Persian

Samaritan Aramaic

Amharic

Arabic

Official Aramaic (700-300 BCE); Imperial Aramaic (700-300 BCE)

Burmese

Chinese

Hebrew

Japanese

Judeo-Persian

Judeo-Arabic

Central Khmer

Lao

Mon-Khmer languages

Pretty sad for me.

Wow. That's just crazy... because you can load a Japanese .epub file into iBooks through iTunes - I've done it. It displays just fine. You can try it too - here's a site where you can download some public domain Japanese literature: http://www.aozora.gr.jp/

And there's even a built-in Japanese dictionary in iBooks! So for Apple not to support it, that just doesn't make sense.

What happens if you list the language as English and re-submit? I'm wondering if someone will look at it and reject it, or if it will just go through.

Yes, AOZORA-BUNKO is tons of collection of Japanese great classics and easily read through iBooks on iPad.

What happened to me is below:

1) Tried to select Language on iTunes Producer as "Japanese" but couldn't find the item on the selection list.

2) I edited the item by hand then submit. Returned error that said length of the item should be 3.

3) I edited again to "jpn", but got an error "ERROR ITMS-6014: "Unsupported language for type 'main': Japanese" at Book/BookMetadata (MZItmspBookMetadataPackage)"

Then, I contacted Apple and received the unsupported language list.

I am not sure, I haven't tried that. And I believe the Language info is important aid for customer, I would not like to make any fake on it...

I strongly believe that is no technical reason, but support Japanese and Chinese like Korea on iTunes Producer is just plus, no minus for anybody.

Pg. 23 in the iTP Agreement:

Description

If a book’s description has one of the following problems, it will removed from sale.

  • ƒ Contains advertisements or links to competitors’ sites or other products
  • ƒ Mentions included materials that don’t exist in digital product (for example, CD, poster, and so on)
  • ƒ Up-selling from the current title to a more complete version
  • ƒ Misleading descriptions (for example, illustrated guides that contain no pictures)
  • ƒ Misrepresenting the product (for example, metadata claims book is in English, when language is actually Japanese)

Yep.

Well, since Apple's not doing it - any other companies care to offer Japanese .epub books?

Technically, Apple does it 🙂 Don't forget...there is a 'books' category for apps. Just remember to call it anything but 'book' or 'ibook'...guide, reference, etc. and you should be good to go.
