Didn't Apple package TechTool with hardware, back when?

Is my memory just failing, or did Apple package earlier versions of TechTool with their hardware? I'm prepared to believe that by paying for Lion I've outgrown Micromat, but the "oh, it's just junk" attitude I'm seeing here doesn't match what I recall..
