Missing DVD/CD icons on desktop/optical drive

I cannot see blank DVDs/CDs on my desktop when I put them in my optical drive. Nothing seems to happen. I've followed mac help to try the following and it still doesn't show up. Do I have a bad optical drive?

THIS IS FROM MAC HELP AND IT DOESN'T SOLVE MY PROBLEM:
Open a Finder window to see if the disc appears there. If it does, your Finder preferences are set not to show removable media on the desktop.

To change this setting, choose Finder > Preferences and click the "Removable media" checkbox.

Check your CD & DVD preferences by choosing Apple menu > System Preferences and clicking CDs & DVDs. If you've set the computer to ignore a CD or DVD when it's inserted, you won't see your disc on the desktop or in a Finder window. Change the appropriate setting to open the Finder when a disc is inserted. (I HAVE CLICKED ON AND OFF THE OTHER ICONS AND THEY DISAPPEAR AND REAPPEAR WITH EACH CLICK...BUT NOT THE DVD/CD ICON).

hey guy this is the "B/W G3 usage" forum. try posting your problem in the Power Mac G5 forum for CD/DVD problems..

meanwhile...

it sounds like the disc(s) isnt mounting.

have you done any work inside the computer? (loose drive cable)

does apple system profiler show the drives?

does disk utility show the drives/discs when a disc is inserted into the drive?

did you tell the system prefs to choose a specific app when a disc is inserted?
