Patchnames for external Synths?

Hello music enthusiasts! 🙂

I'm a longtime Cubase user and just had a look at Logic Express 7. The most annoying thing for me in Cubase was the fact that I had to type all the patch names of all my hardware synths into a text file (Cubase prior to SX) and import that into Cubase or, with Cubase SX, type them into Cubase itself (and possibly export them as an XML file if I wanted to share them with others).
This was a hideous task and up to today I ask myself why nobody ever started some web portal where all the Cubase users in the world could download XML or txt files for their synths!? Instead (I bet!) the same patchname lists for the same synths were made a hundred times by many individuals again and again! 😟

But here comes my user friendly Mac and user friendly OS X and easy to use computer from my beloved company Apple!

I'm SURE this task is much more easy with Logic (Express)!

Don't tell me, I'm wrong!

Am I?

How is this managed with Logic?

By now, even after browsing and scanning the manual I'm not quite sure. I read something about environments but what is it?
Is there ONE way? Or more? I ask because I can think of three ways
1) this is handled by the OS in the MIDI&Audio tool where I defined my MIDI setup.
2) this is handeld by/within Logic
3) this is done with Sounddiver

Option 3) is not really an option because Sounddiver doesn't come with either Logic nor OS X, right?

And it can't be option 1) because I can't enter all patch names and sysex commands there.

So it has to be option 2, right?

But where? Okay, let's forget about GM patch names. The really interesting patches aren't the GM patches. And I have non-GM synths, too.

So, one thing I want to learn is: how do I enter the patch names and sysex commands for my synths?

And the other thing is: because I don't want to do it all again after I did it for Cubase SX, I want to know where I can download these settings and where/how I can import them for each synth in Logic?

I set up all my MIDI hardware/synths in OSX's Audio/MIDI setup tool so I assume Logic knows the devices, too (with their names, too) so that I can select them and import the patch names & sysex commands for each of them.

And please forgive me, but I really don't get it from the Logic manual. It describes each function, check box, menu item but it really doesn't describe actual use cases like this! 😟

Any help?

Thanks a lot!
Stefan.

Stefan,

I've just been battling with this same issue. You can import patch names into Logic after you've added the instrument to the appropriate Environment layer. Click on the icon at the top of the object you've created to represent your instrument. I named mine Roland XP-80 because that's what I use, for exampe. Once you click on that icon you'll get a box that has default patch names, etc. You can copy and paste your patch names from a text file right into Logic. I found the patch names I needed on the Internet and from the Roland.com site.
Hope that helps.

For synths that have been around for a while, you can often find Logic environments online. Some of them even have all the editing features mapped out. A quick Google search found this page:

http://www.infodrom.north.de/~matthi/jv-1080/software.html

Look at the bottom of the page. The first download isn't recognized by LE7, but the second one opened fine. It appears to be for the JV-1080, but that has the same sounds, right? I don't have either of these synths, so I can't test it.

Hi Paul,

thanks for replying. 🙂

I, too, found that windows where I could enter all the patch names manually. Do I really have to do that? How many Logic users are there in the world that have a Roland XP-80 (or XP-30 like me 😉 and already entered this? Do we all have to do that over and over again? :-(((
Looks like there are web sites that have one or the other environment file for one or the other synth.
But, again like with Steinberg, I wonder why neither emagic nor Apple for years now neglect to support the user community here and deliver importable patch name sets for at least the most popular or best-selling synthesizers. :-(((
(Cubase comes at least with a few definition files -- unfortunately for rather old or just very few current gear.)

The other thing I don't understand here is: the patch names is one thing but the corresponding sysex commands is another thing. Where can I determine which patch goes with what midi bytes?
Because not all of my midi devices use the same sysex commands...

Cheers,
Stefan.

I found patch names for all of the XP-80 on the Internet. If you would like them, e-mail me at paulwargo@mac.com. There are some people posting these patch names. Some download, some don't. There are also some listed on the Roland web site. As far as the SysEx commands for each of your synths, you'll need to consult their manuals, but it seems that many are 0 or 32. There are a few synth commands listed in the Bank Message box for other machines that Apple put in line some of the Roland JV series.

Hi Paul,

thanks for bearing with me! 😉

I know where to find the patch names and the sysex codes. Because I made a lot of XML files for Cubase SX myself, see http://www.wops.de

What I don't know is: where and how do I enter these sysex commands into Logic Express?
In Cubase there's a module that lets you create, let's say, 128 entries with 128 different sysex commands with just a click. You enter the basisc and tell Cubase where the loop variable is.
After that you just have to put the patch names to each sysex-commands line and that's it.

How does that process work in Logic? Couldn't find that in the manual. A hint to a page number would be great! 🙂

Thanks & Cheers,
Stefan.
