iPhone IOS5 Contact Handeling (Limit)?

Having the same issue, 6795 contacts, only 600 random contacts will sync to the phone.

Sounds more like a problem with MS ActiveSync than with the phone.

in what capacity? The contacts sync to Outlook (Mac) just fine, which accesses the server through the same ActiveSync protocol.

There have been reports of this problem on multiple platforms. BB, Windows Phone (going way back), iOS, etc.

The only real suggestions I've seen were to either make sure you're on WiFi (not practical... as soon as you leave the WiFi network , the problem seems to recur, even if you actually got it to work OK on the network to begin with), or shut off over the air contact sync and sync by wire with Outlook.

Most reports are with users who have 3000 contacts or more.

It sound like the OP stated he is syncing with Exchange server OTA and not over USB to Outlook client through iTunes.... I don't believe that would have anything to do with MS ActiveSync...I don't have anywhere near 3000 contacts, so I don't have any experience with this issue. I currently sync locally to Outlook through iTunes. The fact that the OP has this issue on 5.x and not 4.x, would lead me to believe iOS is not doing something it should, or used to....Don't dance around the issue...I really wish apple folks would read these forums...there is alot more wrong with iTunes 10/5 and up and iOS 5.x than just this...

If you have a problem, why don't your try starting your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's. If you do have an issue, it is completely unrelated to the OPs problem.

thanks for the suggestion, but I already tried it the wi-fi solutions, same problem every time (just a diffrent set of random contacts it decides to get). The Sync by wire is of course a work around, but this is a feature that should work.

I heartily agree! It really bugs me when apple gives us all this new stuff, but ends up sacrificing something that was actually worth while! Like I said, this isn't the only thing that's wrong with iOS 5.x and iTunes 10.5+.... I'm back on 4.2.1 and iTunes 10.3 again cuz iTunes 10.5-10.6.1 puts my pics back on the phone out of order....Started with Itunes 10.5 and hasn't been fixed yet... I don't have 6000 contacts on my phone, but I do have 6874 pictures....try finding the one you need in that sea.....when they are out of chronological order...I like my 3GS, when it works right... Won't budge from 4.2.1 again till they fix iTunes....

Wish I had a better answer. It's small consolation, but the problem is not unique to the iPhone. That's what makes me lean strongly toward it being an issue with ActiveSync more than any particular phone platform.

There are some known or suspected issues involving contacts with more than 3 phone numbers and / or 2 e-mail addresses as well as custom phone number labels, but I doubt that's what's behind the particular problem you're seeing. Even if it were, editing thousands of contacts to correct that isn't a practical solution. Syncing by wire would be faster, easier, and less of a headache.

ActiveSync was designed originally to sync to Windows CE based PDAs and has mutated into what it is today. Have you checked with your IT department to see if they can examine the activesync logs on the server to get any clues as to what's causing it to fail?

Who's threadjacking? I was just trying to relate that there are other issues with the current setup, and that it sounds like this is not an ActiveSync issue. How is ActiveSync even involved in the OP statement? He's on direct Exchange Server connection.... It sounds like the OP didn't have an issue before going to 5.x, and now does, and he isn't the only one. You people on this forum are getting mean and knowitally....I haven't been on here much in quite a while, and I come back to look around and try and help because of the recent issues I've seen, and you all talk down your noses at me.....Not very professional if you ask me...OP, if local syncing through iTunes is a good workaround for you, I'd do that, but I would also go to the apple feedback page and submit something on this issue. I submitted one for my issue all ready....Threadjacking....ha. You folks need to take a chill pill and play nice... We're all here to help each other out....That's all I was trying to do. Perhaps I can get a bit wordy sometimes...but really..

FYI, That IS ActiveSync. That's how over the air sync with Exchange works. You don't know what you're talking about. Your comments about syncing pictures and the like have absolutely nothing to do with this thread. You've given absolutely no indication that you suffer from anything remotely resembling the OPs problem.

Yes. ActiveSync is used for over the air communication with smartphones. It doesn't matter what platform. The only other way to do it would be to set it up as POP or IMAP if the sysadmins have enabled that, or to route communication through a BBE server for BlackBerries.

Not to be meant as a personal insult xbox, but if you don't know what you are talking about, trying to help can make things worse.

There is no such thing as a "direct talk" to an exchange server, diffrent programs use diffrent protocals.

As of now the question seems to be,
