Advice please - Scanning old photos - org structure?

I am an Aperture newbie and about to embark on a big project scanning thousands of old family photographs. I have a general sense of how to organize data in Aperture, but as a newbie was hoping for some input on recommended strategies for organizing my Library for this project.

Here's the scoop:

  • I am creating a Library exclusively for this project.
  • I'll be scanning lots of old photos of my family, on both my mother's and father's side going back a few generations. There are boxes and boxes of photos. I don't know how many, but I am guessing about 10,000.
  • The prints are mostly organized by family side (easily distinguishible boxes of father-side photos and mother's-side photos, plus some nuclear family photos)
  • The prints are not really organized chronologically, so I am assuming that I will scan in batches and then assign chronology in Aperture.
  • Because the images will be scans, there will be no useful EXIF data in terms of DATE or LOCATION (duh).
  • I will know exact dates for a small number of the images, but generally I will be guessing as to year or decade.
  • I think the main logical attributes to organize around are:
    • Family line (Paternal side, Maternal side, Nuclear)
    • Time (year and decade primarily)
    • Location
    • People
    • Events (Holidays, birthdays, etc.)

I have read lots of posts on Folders vs. Projects, etc. and I am still wondering what the best organizational strategy is. Here's what I am thinking so far:

Old Family Photos LIBRARY (managed)

  • Hatfield Family Side FOLDER
    • 1890's PROJECT
    • 1900's PROJECT
    • 1910's PROJECT
    • etc...
  • McCoy Family Side FOLDER
    • 1890's PROJECT
    • 1900's PROJECT
    • 1910's PROJECT
    • etc...
  • My Family FOLDER
    • 1970's PROJECT
    • 1980's PROJECT
    • etc...
  • TAGS on each image for:
    • Person
    • Location
    • Event
    • Date (day, month, year, decade if known; tag or add to other metadata?)
    • other misc tags based on image contents
  • Smart Folders for most of the typical searches I would want (people, time frames, etc.). I am assuming I can use SF at the LIBRARY level to search across all folders and projects.

Does this make sense? Any advice?
