Why does iTunes stop or freeze shortly after starting

This is a new phenomenon and a pain in the neck. I can't use iTunes at all. I have uninstalled it then reinstalled it to no avail. There is a 'hungapp" message that appears in the problem report area then two more temp file extensions. Can anyone help. Seems this is most common.
