Correct, the iPhone can only be connected to the computer for tethering. No other protocols are supported.

I have the exact same problem: A Macbook AIR will not connect to an IPHONE 5.  Unbelievable.  Apple has clearly lost their touch........UNACCEPTABLE APPLE. Unacceptable.

Not too sure if this answers but I had problems with tethering my macbook pro to new Iphone 5. This is how I did it.  Blue sync device via Macbook. Clear all devices first so that it picks up phone then go through steps. The Macbook said all was fine the phone said forget device. Don't panic.

Go to the wifi connection on mac and you're phone should be there click on it.  It will ask for a wifi code which will be on your iphone, (not the five digit number). You'll find in settings>personal hotspot, punch that in and it should work.

I know it works coz I'm writing this, after a lot of stress and confusion.  Jeez apples supposed to be easy.

    Hope this helps.

My new macbook air and iphone 5 won't pair with bluetooth. iPhone brings up a message that says "Macbook air unsupported" "forget device" whenever I try to pair and cannot make any connection. I attempted the methods above to no success.

For what purpose are you trying to connect the two by Bluetooth?

If for any other reason than Internet Tethering (Personal Hotspot) then it won't work, and isn't supposed to.

APPLE AREN'T HERE, so you're wasting your caps lock.

Nothing needs fixing. Bluetooth in the iPhone works exactly as Apple designed it to work. Just because they decided not to support every Bluetooth profile doesn't mean it is broken. It was a design decision.

Ok....but why would they choose such a design?

No one here can speak for Apple. You will not get an answer to any question of "why" Apple made the design choice they did.
