Correct, the iPhone can only be connected to the computer for tethering. No other protocols are supported.

with the MacBook I understand ok, but the car is pairing with other devices and it finds the Iphone but the Iphone doesnt recognize the comand bluetooth.
thx
I have the exact same problem: A Macbook AIR will not connect to an IPHONE 5. Unbelievable. Apple has clearly lost their touch........UNACCEPTABLE APPLE. Unacceptable.
Not too sure if this answers but I had problems with tethering my macbook pro to new Iphone 5. This is how I did it. Blue sync device via Macbook. Clear all devices first so that it picks up phone then go through steps. The Macbook said all was fine the phone said forget device. Don't panic.
Go to the wifi connection on mac and you're phone should be there click on it. It will ask for a wifi code which will be on your iphone, (not the five digit number). You'll find in settings>personal hotspot, punch that in and it should work.
I know it works coz I'm writing this, after a lot of stress and confusion. Jeez apples supposed to be easy.
Hope this helps.

basically you are saying that I pay for something that is not going to work.
shame on apple
I could my phone picked up in the system but couldn't make it work. Can you add any other details, please?
My new macbook air and iphone 5 won't pair with bluetooth. iPhone brings up a message that says "Macbook air unsupported" "forget device" whenever I try to pair and cannot make any connection. I attempted the methods above to no success.
For what purpose are you trying to connect the two by Bluetooth?
If for any other reason than Internet Tethering (Personal Hotspot) then it won't work, and isn't supposed to.
I never buy anything more from Apple product...! I have a macbook pro, it's PRO apple >.< , but I can't connect bluetooth to iphone 5.. I can't send or transfer file over bluetooth...hello macbook and iphone it is a same product...please fix it... and btw..your apple apps suck,..useless -_-
This is still a problem with the iphone 5s, FIX THE PROBLEM APPLE! Samsung Galaxy S4 can connect to my Macbook Pro! My next phone is sure to not be apple with problems such as this existing.
I am talking with the support supervisor at Apple and he cant connect his Iphone to a Macbook either. I am on hold while he does some troubleshooting. Will let you all know if he comes up with a soluton.
I had the same problem i just turned on iCloud on both devices and logged in (iPhone 5 and macbook air) and turned on photo streaming and all my photos from my macbook synced on the photo stream on my phone

Not at all the same problem.
Just having same problem now..only remembered from last phone I had I've been here before. Apple phones don't connect to macs because with icloud it's not necessary. Iphone bluetooth just connects to other devices. That is the answer I got from AppleCare support a year or so ago. Now I have a new iphone (5s) forgot all that have been wasting my time energy trying in vain to connect. Answer: IPHONES WON"T CONNECT TO A MAC VIA BLUETOOTH. Let me know if anyone knows different.
