Hey. I know this may sound silly but i experienced exactly the same issue, also with an iphone 4; the solution i found resolved the issue instantly ...i grabbed a small pin and the the dragged the dust / fluff lodged inside the main connection socket out, careful not to do any damage by scratching the contacts/connectors. The ring tone was never an issue but instantly my txt tone, keyboard clicks, music (from iph speaker), app sounds, lock screen sound, and even the beep you get when you connect power socket - all these returned.

Hope this works for you! Good luck.

It looks like I'm not the only one having these problems. I updated to IOS 5.1 and my WIFI quit working. I called my provider (Verizon) and they sent me another phone. On my "new" phone, I updated and now my text tones don't work, just viberate. Needless to say, I have my 3rd iPhone on the way and should be here tomorrow. I was better off not having the WIFI.😠

Hope your issue has been solved, but just in case it has not, I have a suggestion. It has been discussed that there is some sort of hang up after using earbuds, which is apparently true. I had the same problem and here is how I solved it. I plugged in earbuds, clicked on the Music icon on the home screen and selected a song to play from my library. While the song was playing through the earbuds, I clicked on the rectangle and triangle icon located to the right of the "forward" function on the lower portion of the screen (reverse, pause/play, forward and then the rectangle/triangle). It should then give you the option to select iPhone or another option for audio (Sound ID bluetooth, in my case). Select iPhone and all of your sounds should return through your phone. Hope this helps -- if not you, then perhaps someone else with the same issue. :-)

The cleaning the connector hole with a pin worked. My phone got damp last week and all sounds apart from the ring tone stopped working. I had so much fluff and dust in the hole where the charger goes that when it got wet it clumped up in a big lump and stopped certain things working. Was getting so fed up and was just about to order a replacemnet dock connector board to fit until i saw this post. Thanks 88naples

I had this same problem but just fixed it. I had already tried a re-boot and then a factory reset. Neither worked.

So what's the solution?

Get a small pin and clean out the connector hole in the bottom of your iphone. Be very careful and do this gently. You'll be amazed how much fluff collects in there. Once I had cleaned this out the text tones immediately started working. I assume that some of the fluf created a short circuit. Good luck
