I might need a newer shuffle ..... where would an error message be displayed?

As for OP's basic question, well — I have a series of Shuffles, with one original 1G still working, if a bit creakily (well, it's from April '05, after all), a 2G that's just a bit over 3 years old by now, a 3G that I got as a gift but never ever use anymore as I just hated the whole playlist approach to things, plus the sound was way weaker and tinnier than either of the first two .... come to think of it I gave that away a year ago and haven't missed it.

Anyway .. while I do a lot of podcast play on the Shuffles, both of them, I've never actually tried to use an Audiobook on them and don't really see how it would work. It does work after a fashion on the Nano (the one with the cam in it, maybe 5G?) but there you do have a screen to allow navigating back to where you were after it gets lost, as it periodically seems to do.

If I were going to try, though, and I was seeing your symptoms, then the first thing I'd try is cleaning off the Shuffle and sync'ing in only the audiobook and seeing if that made any difference at all. Try playing it with the switch set on both Shuffle and Play In Order, too.

Actually,  I'd make sure I was doing it the right way iaw the guidance in Apple's Knowledge Base article regarding this topic, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1831 . More specific guidance could be given here but it does depend on basic things like what kind of Shuffle, what kind of a file, how the attempts to now have been made, and so forth.
