iMac OSX Lion loses internet connection (ethernet) waking up from sleep

My brand new iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 loses internet connection after computer wakes up from sleep. This is not a WiFi problem because I am plugged in with ethernet. It loses its connection roughly 50% of the time it wakes up and then I have to go through the diagnostics and reboot my cable modem and router. It is very frustrating. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease but the problem continues. Has anyone encountered this problem and what did you do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

The software update is for wi-fi (wireless) connections. Your problem, though similar may have a different cause.

For the rest of you: The software update seems to have handled my "loss of connection after sleep" issues. I've put my iMac to sleep repeatedly since installing it yesterday and I'm going strong. So if you haven't updated yet, go for it.

Small apology here: I didn't notice that Vinnyob said his problem wasn't wi-fi but ethernet. When I jumped into this thread I was talking solely about wi-fi. The bug fix solved that issue. I'm sorry for any confusion that might have caused. Stil new to forums and I read it quickly because I was so excited to see "my" problem being addressed. 🙂

I surfed and found a solution, that worked for me. Hopefullythis helps someone else, who happens to come across this thread and just can not seem to find an answer.

This man wrote an article about having simallar issues with connecting, when the real issue was a permissions problem in OS X Lion. He gives detailed instructions on how to reset the permissions in his article. It doesnt hurt to try. It worked for me.

I did file the bug report and set my energy saver settings to only put the display to sleep, computer to never sleep. This workaround was working fine for about a week until a couple days ago when I lost my internet (ethernet plugged in, not WiFi) connection again! It's happened twice in the last two days. It does it slightly differently now than before. Originally, when my computer was awaken from sleep and I opened Safari, it immediately told my I had no internet connection and gave me the diagnostics option. Now, when I wake my display (computer never slept) and I open Safari, the blue status load bar starts to grow towards the right slightly then stops. No content was loaded, just a blank page. I tried several different websites and the same result: blue bar starts slightly then stops and nothing loaded. After 2 or 3 of these attempts, then I get the "no connection" page with the diagnostics option. My computer is fully up to date. I don't know what else to do since the workaround is no longer working for me.

I have this same issue and it only started happening when I went to 10.7.3 - I have a mac mini connected via a cable to the router (a time capsule)

what I notice is that if I open system preferences/network it shows the connection

I then put the computer to sleep and then wake it

the network connection says teh cable is unpluged and after 15-20 seconds it recovnizes it and I have me connection again.

I'll report this to apple

Please look at my last post, there is a link to a fix. Download it following the on-screen instructions and if necessary reboot the computer. If you need to reboot reboot in Safe Mode first to clear some caches. You do that by holding down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone, release the Shift Key when you see a progress bar appear at the bottom of the screen. Let the machine fully boot then restart normally.

Well when I go to install it it tells me 'This software is not supported on your system'

So there is a problem in 10.7.3 that when my HARD WIRED mini goes to sleep the network adapter thinks the connection is unpluged.

I turn on WiFi and leave the system preferences - network open. Both connections are active and have IP addresses.

I put the mini to sleep wait 6 seconds and wake it up,

the WiFi connection comes right back, but the hard wired connection takes 15-20 seconds to re-establish and get its IP address

I did not realize you had a Mac Mini, the fix I posted is for iMacs. We both made errors, mine was not carefully reading your first post and yours was posting in the wrong forum.

I have no experience with MM's so I can't really assist you, if wi-fi works on your system then I can't see a reason not to use it. Otherwise my recommendation would be to post in the correct MM forum and see if someone there has some thoughts. You can also call AppleCare assuming you have it or visit an Apple Store and speak to a Genius, they both may have some ideas.
