why do some apps show as .app ?

My friend's Applications folder (also shows up in the dock) is rife with applications which have .app after the name, whereas I have none and have never seen any on other Snow Leopard computers...or for that matter on any OSX operating system. When I transferred a small app from my computer to my friend's computer (through a USB memory stick) it showed up on my friend's computer with that .app after the name. Anyone know why or how this happens, or (more importantly) how to fix it so the .app doesn't appear?

Finder preferences, Advanced, checkbox for show all filename extensions. Check it an you wil see the .app on applications. Also appropriate extensions on other stuff as well if a file has a filename extension.

Uncheck the checkbox and the extnsions won't be seen.

Just to add to the advice you've already received, you may find confusing the fact that disabling the "Show all filename extensions" option does not hide all filename extensions; some, eg, .jpg, will continue to be shown. This is intentional:

Irrespective of the global setting, you can hide the extension of a specific file in the Get Info panel.
