I want to connect my MacBook and my HDTV

I have connected my MacBook (white - 13"- Late 2009) to my HDTV. I have bought an adapter for the miniport and connected it to an HDMI cable. I have then connected the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on my TV. I have then tuned the TV into the HDMI port.

However the TV icon is not showing on the top toolbar of my Mac. Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
