You can try a hard reset first. To do this, first make sure the hold switch is not activated, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to connect the iPod to iTunes and restore as the issue could be related to the iPod's hard disk of the iPod's software.
