Q: Superdrive won't read DVDs after Lion update...

There are a few threads about this on the forums but no one has a definitive answer to this bizare problem... I've tried every suggestion/solution that I've found to no avail... So I'm creating another thread in an attempt to find an answer...

Ever since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't.  Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned???  How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

Same issue, haven't yet found a fix.  Apple is quickly losing points with me and has been for some time now.

I have the same issue. Upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Regretting my decision to upgrade, not much improvement in functionality but lost my superdrive. Really ******* me off. I have early 2008 MBP 2.5 GHz. Lost my faith in apple, may switch to windows with the windows 8 coming.

I've got faith that they'll release a fix but not that it won't take a while.

Agreed. We are the blind leading the blind and Apple is nowhere to be found. I'd also feel better if I knew that they were at least looking at the situation. Not sure Apple even looks at this forum.

Apple makes no promise to read these forums, and NEVER responds here. These are User-to-User forums.

If you are looking for a response from Apple, Inc, you need to take your computer to an Apple Store or contact AppleCare.

Been there, done that. Apple acknowledged the problem, but has no fix. I did that FIRST, before resorting to this forum. Just sayin'

Ok, thanks Grant, I understand that now. Wished it was clearer though. So what we all need to do is contact Apple support and send them a problem report. The more ppl that do it the better.

Any updates yet? I am having a similar issue. My Superdrive will read film DVDs but not a game and my Adobe disc (I need to reinstall it). Apple store said they could replace my Superdrive for $100 or they can test it for up to 5 days. I cant afford to be without it for that long right now. Has anyone gotten their computer "tested" at Apple? I am convinced it has to be firmware or software because my Superdrive will read installation DVDs and movies.

Sometimes the only fix is the next OS.

Did 10.7.4 make a difference? there is suppose to be one more update to Lion.

There was the 10.8.1 update out now also.

A DVD drive from MacSales, Newegg, Amazon.... are less than $30.
