Q: Superdrive won't read DVDs after Lion update...

There are a few threads about this on the forums but no one has a definitive answer to this bizare problem... I've tried every suggestion/solution that I've found to no avail... So I'm creating another thread in an attempt to find an answer...

Ever since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't.  Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned???  How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

I've got the same problem.. MB pro 2011, Osx 10.7.5. What's funny though is that DVD playing works like a charm in the Windows XP virtual machine I have! (Running VMWare). Lets hope apple gives a ****.. They're outphasing disc drive support, aren't they?

I couldn't be more disappointed with Mountain Lion.  I never would have left Snow Leopard had it not been for their not releasing the new Xcode for Snow Leopard.

I'm comfortable in saying that Apple had a good run, but that has come to an end.  They want to merge mobile and desktop and they're failing at it.

I'm looking forward to developing for Android and rocking linux or Windows 8.  Screw this elitist company.

      Interconnect:          ATAPI

      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose File > Refresh Information

13-inch, Mid 2012 [Note I purchased this 'latest version' on June 14, 2013]

Processor  2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB

Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)  [It did not come pre-loaded at this rev,  but about three hours of diddling with APPLECARE starting before I even turned the machine on the 1st time, got it to this rev]

I selected a model with a superdrive on board because I foolishly assumed it would let me Restore my rather extensive iTunes library of well over 2000 legally purchased songs to the new itunes.

    Assume Nothing!

The preloaded updated itunes backup/restore will not recognize nor provide an option to use the Superdrive.

I plugged in an external hard drive, dragged and dropped all of the old iTunes music folders into the new iTunes folder I put there. I was relieved that all the subfolders came with, ejected the external hard drive, plugged it into the new Mabook Pro, fished around until I found (in finder) under MY USER NAME -iTunesiTunes Media-Automatically, then pasted everything there.

It appears that almost every song made it, however somewhat compressed. Only the two songs I purchased from the iTunes store would not be accepted at all and a dialogue box yelled at me about it, the machine thinking those were not purchased. Bad Machine!

None of the album artwork made it. But after I activated the iTunes genius and allowed it to scan all my music, NONE of which was purchased from the iTunes store, but from eMusic.com, it added several album covers. Then I ran get 'album artwork' and I got maybe 95% of the album artwork, however some of it was different, same album name, but different pictures. It also created a printable text file of the missing album artwork called iTunes.txt in the iTunes folder under my USER NAME-Music-iTunes-NOT under Music at the top level of finder, but under the myuser music...

Previously, I tried a preferences setting to use ipod as a separate drive, checking the 'manually control' option, yet did not click sync because I fugured it would just mess up the iPod.

So, why did my three hours with Apple Care not help me migrate the itunes more sensibly? Idk. That was one of the main goals of the case. I still have a case open tho.

I still want to get the rest of the freakin album artwork.

The answer is that 'they' do not want you to use the superdrive for storage, or reading data, or maybe not even as a bootable drive. Idfk why.

I am really trying not to mess up the way this machine is configured. But, I don't like the idea of not having a fully functional cd/dvd drive.

It is absolutely ridiculous that I have a brand new computer, legally purchased iTunes library, and Apple Care dodged the bullet on migrating my iTunes library. We paused the tech session after we finally found a downloadable file that could get my OS to OS X 10.8.4. It would take a good hour to download, so they left the case id open after 3 hours of phone time 'helping me' open up a brand new machine. Oh Well...

Have a 2011 iMac on Lion and am experiencing the something very similiar.  I have a Win 7 DVD I want to use to install bootcamp with, however when I put it in, the system tells me it is a blank DVD (when it isn't).

If I go over to my Mac Pro 1,1 running Lion it handles it just fine, sees the DVD and shows me the files.

I am absolutely with you! I have a perfectly good Mac Pro 2,1. Decided to upgrade to use Creative Cloud 2014, had to upgrade from Snow Leopard, really wish I hadn't cos  printer stopped working and more significantly for me the 2  DVD superdrives do not recognise dvds just burned from a much older laptop and system. Starting to feel very very aggrieved by it. I've used Apple Macs since they came to UK and always recommended them but no more. :-(

I have had the same problem for over a year; can't get any solution. Very frustrating. I'm convinced it was intentional to force us to use downloaded music and videos only... forcing us into "iPad mindset". At this point, after using Macs for 17 years, I'll never buy another, and I'll never recommend Apple to anyone.
