My Safari browser has been hijacked by malware called My Site. What to do?

Last night I opened up Safari to find a colorful homepage called MySite. Next to the search box is text, 'enhanced by Google'. I immediately shut down my computer. I am sure this is malicious malware, my first in the four years of Mac ownership. What do I do now?

Re: What is Mystart

My guess is that you have downloaded and installed some kind of crapware. Possibly, from the sounds of it, multiple pieces of crapware. You need to be more cautious what you install on your computer!

Try starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key at startup. If you are then able to use Safari without problems, but it goes back to giving you trouble if you reboot normally, then that clinches the diagnosis. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell you what to remove or how to remove it without knowing more.
