I've been having the same 'no-write' problems with my card reader but now it won't work at all!!
I've checked the system profiler which states: 'This computer doesn't contain any Apple Internal Memory Card Readers.' !!!
What is going on??
Any help is most appreciated!
MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Same problem on a PB pro retina 15.
The solution:
1) turn off PB
2) remove the lower back using a pentalobe screw
3) look at the i/O board Cable (flat cale between the logic board and the I/O board)
4) push the connector in the socket on the logic board (image below is for removing)
5) close the back
6) restart pb
now everything work fine

If you've had some problems before, IMHO it's probable that the card reader is dead.
However, to be sure, disconnect any external USB devices which might be attached to your MBP. Restart. If that doesn't solve it, reset the SMC.

If AHT finds no error, but the card is still not visible to SP, then it's dead.

I've read through many of the threads on this subject and can't find any resolutions. Has this issues been offically resolved in any maner, do you know?

If the card is not locked, given the previous issues, I'd suspect your card reader to be defective.
Thanks, resetting the SMC solved my disappeared SD slot reader!
I figured it was a hardware failure but my macbook pro 13" retina now has a working SDXC card slot again!
Just letting future googlers know 🙂
This last procedure worked for me. The cable seems to come disconnected after a time.
